Charity Beneficiary
The 2008 beneficiary of the TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon 10K is The Susan L. Curtis Foundation.
TD Banknorth, through the TD Banknorth Charitable Foundation, will provide a cash donation of $30,000. The Susan L. Curtis Foundation will also benefit from fundraising activities and publicity associated with the race.
The Susan L. Curtis Foundation is a nonprofit organization with a mission to build the individual character, self-confidence and self-esteem of economically disadvantaged Maine children through the provision of tuition-free, high-quality camping, educational and social experiences. Each year Camp Susan Curtis, located in Stoneham, ME, hosts over 650 Maine children in need. More than 500 of those children attend the residential summer camp program, about 80 attend the Arts Education Center at Hewnoaks and 100 children are hosted as part of a one-week special Adventure Camp for inner-city Lewiston, Maine, children. Year-round programming is also offered for Leadership Development campers.
The Foundation was founded in 1971 and named for the daughter of Governor Kenneth M. Curtis and Pauline B. Curtis after Susan’s death from cystic fibrosis. Today, the Susan L. Curtis Foundation endeavors to overcome the effects of poverty- a devastating disease of the spirit which can cripple a child’s dignity and aspirations.
